Eye Care: The Importance Of Eye Care

If you have any symptoms such as tearing, discharge, red-eye, photophobia, headache, and others, look for an ophthalmologist in places like Kraff eye institute for instance. Only he can examine a patient and prescribe glasses or contact lenses, which is a medical act; that’s why we have to preserve it.

Lack of eye care can cause vision complications. That’s why it’s essential to keep regular visits to the ophthalmologist, who helps detect and prevent eye problems, avoiding aggravations resulting from asymptomatic diseases.

Vision is the first sense that resents age. The eyes are susceptible organs. In healthy individuals, eye problems start from the age of 40 with tired eyesight (presbyopia), which is not considered a disease, but a condition that occurs in all people after 40 years. The number of cases represents 18.3% of the Brazilian population, approximately 39 million people.

Cataracts, the leading cause of reversible blindness in the world. Glaucoma, an asymptomatic disease, is responsible for 12.3% of cases of vision loss in adults. Prevalence increases with age. It is estimated between 1% and 2% in the general population, reaching 6% and 7% after 70 years of age.

AMD (Age-Related Macular Degeneration), the main cause of blindness in the elderly due to the body’s aging, is responsible for 4% of blindness in the world.

In addition to these pathologies, diabetic retinopathy, which, as its name says, is caused by complications from diabetes, is also a concern.

There are also congenital diseases: cataracts, glaucoma, and retinoblastoma detected early by the Little Eye Test (Red Reflex Examination), mandatory in practically every country. This exam must be done in the first days of the new-born’s life.

A periodic visit to the ophthalmologist is the best way to prevent possible eye problems. The ophthalmologic consultation should take place in childhood and adulthood, between 30 and 40 years. And from the age of 40, the recommendation is an annual exam. People with family members who have an eye disease should undergo exams more frequently from childhood.
